KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days
Planned Release: This Winter
Nintendo DS
Fans who have played the main numbered titles might find the DS button layout--moving with the D-pad, selecting commands with the X button--a little bit like being lost at sea. But, even that is only right at the start. In no time the discomfort fades and you feel like you're playing "Kingdom Hearts". The most unusual part is using the lower touch screen to change perspectives. While your left thumb is on the D-pad controlling movement, your right thumb manages the touch panels to regulate the point of view. It's quite an original way of controlling things (though it's possible this will change over development). The battle system is very simple with nothing unusual about it. However, gone is the system where magic used MP. Instead, we saw that commands like Fire had a number beside them, showing that each command is now governed by a limited number of uses.
At first, the playable demo was of Roxas and Axel together in Twilight Town carrying out a mission. On the way were some gimmicks like hitting switches to open doors, eventually leading to a boss battle in the plaza. In the boss battle, just like the rest of the [Kingdom Hearts] series you'll have an easier time once you have the boss's characteristics and movement patterns down. The nice feeling of puzzling out the attack patterns ("So if I do this, that's what happens!) is rewarding above and beyond the fun of the action. Also we see the scene of Roxas and Axel eating sea-salt ice cream on the clock tower, and get the feeling the secret story behind their friendship will be explained.
In another playable episode, we get to fight alongside Xaldin, and here too are the gimmicks of moving stone statues around to proceed. Because Xaldin's equipped lance has a long reach, he'd end up hitting Roxas which seemed a small fault. There's no damaging the other player, but it would cancel Roxas's actions, so when fighting with a teammate it might be a good idea to focus on your own area.
And finally....this time, through the theater video footage, the name off the Organization's 14th member was revealed: Xion [pronounced Shee-on]. Just who's Nobody is she supposed to be...? We've lots of guesses, and until the release that's what we'll be happy with.
