KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep
Planned Release: 2009
Playstation Portable

The two playable parts of "Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep" were Tera's chapter in the world of Sleeping Beauty, and Ventus (Ven)'s chapter set in Cinderella's world. In previously released info we've seen Tera, and Ventus who has been called "Ven" to this point, as the main characters. It would appear "Ven" is a nickname and Ventus is the character's official name. Though, from his appearance we want to call Ventus "Roxas"...

Putting name discussion aside, first we played Tera's chapter. In a world of wide rolling green plains, we're abruptly attacked by enemies. They're a new type of enemy, neither Heartless nor Nobody, never before seen in the Kingdom Hearts games. It appears they're named Unbirths. With a design that's a fusion of curves and sharp points, we get the impression they're like a middle ground between Heartless and Nobodies. Here we'll introduce a summary of the new features and game elements. Tera, with a large physique and impressive attacks, is a Power Type character, though he can use magic. However, unlike the MP system from the [Kingdom Hearts] series so far, once you've used a magic attack you are unable to use it again for a set amount of time. You do need to use a variety of magic, and we get the feeling strategy and tactics will play a bigger part...but, will we lose the ability to just charge our enemies and rely on Cure to see us through? Also, basic attacks have been majorly changed. If you repeatedly choose "Attack" the command changes from "Attack" to "Blitz" to "Barrage", and the action gets more and more furious. Also if you continue to attack, the attack attribute type changes. There's a time limit, and we're reminded of the Form transformations from Kingdom Hearts II. This time, the attack types seem to be called "Command Style". Among the Command Styles it appears there are quite a few, like the fire-type "Fire Blazer". Because the attack type changes naturally as you fight, there's a ton of variation even in normal battles, and we had a lot of fun with the large number of possible moves.

But wait, there's more! The newly added "Shoot Lock" is a technique you can use by expending your Focus Gauge. You're thrust into an FPS-style first person viewpoint where you have a limited time to lock on to enemies by centering them on the screen, a system just like focusing a camera. Once you've locked on to a set minimum number of enemies and press the circle button, a number of light beams reach out from Tera's keyblade and pierce the enemies!! The pressure of focusing on enemies with a time limit counting down, and the satisfaction of releasing waves of power at the focused bad guys are a new welcome attraction to "Kingdom Hearts". It really was exhilarating!

We continue with Ventus's chapter. Ventus is similar to Roxas' type, attacking with a variety of moves. However, he's characterized by his form of holding his keyblade in a reverse backwards grip. His Command Style change and focus systems are the same as Tera's, but has Command Styles Tera did not. It's possible styles are unique for each character. Also, different from Tera's Shoot Lock finishing technique, [Ventus] unleashes a string of attacks at a single target. It would seem the move could be of use in boss battles.

Ventus' chapter is a colorful adventure where you gather materials to make Cinderella's dress. There are gimmicks such as fighting Unbirths that attack from atop balls of wool, and the like. Once you've gathered all the dress components, you fight a boss battle against Neko Lucifer [Lucifer the cat]. Hitting Lucifer in the face as he bounces and flies around the room causes a Reaction Command to appear! Hitting the correct button prompts as they appear allows Ventus to straddle Lucifer like a kind of rodeo. Inputting all the commands correctly allows you to deal a lot of damage in one shot, but in comparison the timing feels quite a bit stricter than the Reaction Commands in "Kingdom Hearts II". Still, for a series known as the best at having your battles play out in grand dramatic fashion, [Birth by Sleep] did not disappoint in this regard at all.

Despite sharing a similar basic control scheme with previous Kingdom Hearts titles, the hectic changing commands, Command Style changes, and the Shoot Lock system all make for a new level of intense rush. More than anything we felt that things have gotten speedier. But rather than that making things more difficult, keeping up with the tempest of battle while unleashing attacks that feel good and rewarding left us feeling like "Man, I'm good!" more than we ever have before. The 2009 release is a ways off, but we tried out the much anticipated new battle system and were left more than impressed!
