Cloud's Story Mode Script Tranlsated!
A friend of mine asked me for some of this info... and well, I ended up doing the whole thing by watching gameplay videos. But no more spoilers for me until my game arrives! Either way, I was lucky that this script wasn't too hard to understand... but then again, I've only done the fully voiced and acted scenes. Sorry, no text-only dialogue in here. Anyway, the script - all 8 and a half pages of it - is under the cut.
Okay, just a few mark-up notes - [anything in brackets is stage directions], "Anything in quotes is inner monologue," and (anything in parenthesis are my notes and comments)
Alright so... not going through the villain voiceless dialogue at the moment. Or Cid's stuff. Since I'm jut doing this for fun for once. Besides, Cloud's storyline has a simple problem at its heart - Why is his fighting? Not much to say about the first stage... but apparently, not even the villains like Sephiroth.
Anyway, start of Stage 2 we have the other members of the party assembling...
Cecil: And? Did you obtain a Crystal?
Cloud: No, there was nothing.
Tidus: We learned that to save the world, we need the Crystals
Tidus: But how are we supposed to find them?
Firion: I suppose that we need to keep fighting?
Firion: We must defeat all of the enemies that stand before us.
Cloud: I don't think you understand. Fighting recklessly is dangerous.
Cloud: You don't achieve victory simply by fighting all of your opponents.
Tidus: Then maybe that's a good reason to take a break from all this fighting.
Firion: I certainly think so.
Cecil: Cloud, you are quite helpful with how you keep such composed judgment in this situation.
Tidus: You set a good example yourself, Cecil.
Firion: You should talk.
[And they all laugh and it's adorable]
Firion: The four of us, will not be defeated.
Cloud: "Composed?"
Cloud: "No, that's not it."
Cloud: "Surely, I..."
Anyway, then Stage 2 opens up and Cloud mentions that there are imitation versions of their opponents. And again, his party members comment on his composure. Cloud clarifies in his monologue that he is not composed, he is actually anxious. Now, on to the next talking scene...
Tidus: So, what exactly are the Crystals?
Cecil: The Crystals are what we need to defeat Chaos.
Firion: And Cosmos expects us to carry out her request.
Cloud: What are we fighting for?
Firion: What are we... to defeat Chaos of course.
Firion: Don't you want to bring peace back to this world?
Cloud: Cosmos simply said to gather the Crystals.
Cloud: She didn't guarantee that it would defeat Chaos or bring peace to the world.
Cloud: None of us really know what will happen to this world in the end.
Tidus: But no matter what, I believe in her!
Firion: Besides, what would happen if we did not fight?
Cloud: I... agree that we should.
Cloud: But I want to know what we are fighting for, not just blindly follow orders.
Firion: Cloud...
Cloud: What about all of you?
Cloud: In this situation, you should want to learn the reason why you are fighting.
Cecil: My reason for fighting... I would like to know that as well.
Tidus: For me, it's to settle with my old man!
Tidus: But, I guess that is a personal problem.
Cloud: That's fine, Tidus.
Firion: For me, it doesn't require a lot of thought.
Firion: But I understand that you want to find your answer, Cloud.
Cloud: An answer?
Lalala, skip along to the next story scene, time for Cloud and Firion to have a heart to heart... the Dissidia way!
Firion: I've been thinking about my reason to fight.
Firion: Working out exactly what those words mean is more difficult than I thought
Cloud: It is.
Firion: But there is one thing I know for sure.
Firion: That in spite of everything else, there is this.
[Firion produces a rose]
Cloud: What is it?
Firion: It is my "Wild Rose."
Firion: It always reminds me of that landscape*.
*(I assume he is speaking of Fynn here)
Firion: And it is for that reason that I will not stop fighting.
Firion: Ah, would you mind if I told you about my dream...
Cloud: Your dream?
Firion: Yes, the dream that I will never abandon.
Firion: For that, I will keep fighting.
Cloud: Firion...
Cloud: Won't you fight with me?
Firion: Eh?
Cloud: I want to know.
Cloud: If you will really continue to keep fighting.
Cloud: I want to see how strong your dream is.
Firion: But...
Firion: I understand. I accept your challenge.
[insert awesome fight scene here]
Firion: It is... not over yet!
[Firion's weapons surround Cloud... but then fall to the ground without doing any harm]
Cloud: It is a truly admirable thing.*
*(referring to Firion's dream)
Firion: As I was saying... My dream,
Firion: I will never abandon it.
Cloud: Ah, but...
Cloud: I am not like you.
Firion: Why is that?*
*(I love this line so much)
Cloud: As much as I search, I can't find anything.
Cloud: And if I don't have a dream, then what I am supposed to feel?
Cloud: Sorry, I don't mean to worry you with my problems.
Cloud: "The answer that I sought..."
Cloud: "It seems that it wasn't here either."
And after an odd little dialogue between Garland and Sephiroth (which I may go back and fill in later, we will see)...
Cecil: Cloud, did you get your answer from Firion?
Cloud: Yes... If his dream comes true,
Cloud: then all of his fighting will have been truly worth something.
Cecil: That sounds like what he would say.
Cloud: Were you listening in?
Cecil: I am sorry to say so, though I was taught better than that.
Cecil: For him, the blooming of the Wild Rose signals peace spread over the earth.
Cloud: It is almost like a dream a child would have.
Cecil: Even so, he was still honest with you.
Cloud: The wishes of this Planet....
Cloud: Cecil, what do you think they are?
Cecil: Cloud, I cannot give you the answer you seek.
Cecil: I don't believe you will find anyone who can properly answer your question unless you know what it is.
Cecil: What are you searching for?
Cloud: But...
[Firion and Tidus' arrival cuts him off]
Firion: Let's go, Cloud.
Cloud: You two...
Tidus: We'll cheer you up!
Cloud: Everything is okay between us?
[Firion nods]
Firion: On one condition,
Firion: as you look for your answer, you will let us teach you a few things.*
*(wink, wink, nudge, nudge)
Cloud: I understand. It's a promise.
Okay, so now we have Sephiroth's introduction. Which, as always, borders on the homoerotic. (And I'm saying this when I'm not even a Sephiroth/Cloud fan)
Sephiroth: Long time no see, Cloud
Cloud: Sephiroth!
[Sephiroth draws his sword, prepared to battle]
Sephiroth: Why won't you fight me?
Cloud: What meaning would there be in fighting you.
Cloud: Above all else, this fight between us is meaningless.
Sephiroth: Then who could you have a meaningful fight with?
Cloud: That's not it. All I want is to have a proper reason for fighting.
Sephiroth: Still nothing but a puppet.
Cloud: What?
Sephiroth: I will give you a reason to fight.
[Sephiroth then produces Firion's rose]
Sephiroth: I seem to have plucked* a dream...
*(If I were an evil fangirl translator, I would have written "I seem to have deflowered a dream." Since Firion's Japanese nickname is "virgin" and let's be honest, Sephiroth seems like the type of villain who would do that...)
Sephiroth: Such a pity, it was just truly starting to live...
Cloud: This... is Firion's...?
Cloud: It can't be... what did you do to him!?
Sephiroth: Is this reason enough for you? If so, chase after me.
[Sephiroth vanishes at this point]
Okay so Cloud storms off to find Sephiroth, upset that he has gotten yet another person in trouble and doubly pissed off that his old enemy is behind it. So at the end of the stage, he comes to confront the man... and it is a slightly different scene that what we have watched before.
Sephiroth: You've finally come.
Sephiroth: I told you to chase me, and you obediently did as I said.
Cloud: What?
Sephiroth: Just as a river flows*.... Well, I did give you a reason to fight.
*(He's commenting on how incredibly predictable Cloud is)
Sephiroth: If all you do is search, then you will never find yourself.
Sephiroth: It can't be helped - humans are always ready to happily jump towards a meaning.
Cloud: What are you talking about?
Sephiroth: Just like your comrades, who find their meaning in their search for the Crystals.
Sephiroth: But then, what of you?
Sephiroth: As you cannot decide upon anything, you are simply a puppet waiting to be manipulated.
Cloud: No! I am...
Sephiroth: That is why I have given you meaning.
Sephiroth: Isn't that what you desire...
Cloud: Shut up!
Cloud: There is no meaning in what you can give me.
Cloud: I came here of my own free will!
Sephiroth: What you are saying, is only what you think you happened.
Cloud: I could say the same of you.
And time for the trailer scenes! Whoo!
Cloud: Sephiroth!
Cloud: I will lay you to rest here!
Sephiroth: En garde then!
Sephiroth: For I will be the one to guide you.
Sephiroth: Shall I give you despair, Cloud?
Cloud: I find my own way.
Sephiroth: You are merely a puppet.
[Can I say that I love the referential editing here? Yay, send up to the Kalm Flashback!]
So they have their great big fated showdown... again...
[The Crystal of FFVII's world, which looks a great deal like the fully powered White Materia, floats in front of Cloud and he reaches out for it]
Cloud: This is the Crystal...
Sephiroth: You have found it, as well as despair.
Sephiroth: If you take it, you shall only be thrown into another battle.
Cloud: This is... my predestination.
Cloud: I...This is the reality I must live with*.
*(this line is a bit odd so I did the best I could)
Sephiroth: So it is.
Sephiroth: Look upon its radiance, and remember it well.
Sephiroth: For it was through my guidance that you obtained it.
Sephiroth: How many times have I guided you now...
[Sephiroth vanishes at this point]
Cloud: I decide my own path.
Cloud: "Though, I might lose my way."
Cloud: "But I found my own answer in the promise I made with my companions this time."
Cloud: "I will keep fighting."
